Intel to launch its first gaming GPUs, Arc, in 2022

US-based chipmaker Intel has announced that it is coming up with a new brand for consumer high-performance graphics products, called Intel Arc. The Arc brand will cover hardware, software and services, and will span multiple hardware generations, with the first generation, based on the Xe HPG microarchitecture, code-named Alchemist (formerly known as DG2), said the company.
Besides this, Intel also revealed the code names of future generations under the Arc brand: Battlemage, Celestial and Druid.
The Arc-based Alchemist GPUs are expected to be available in early 2022 in both desktops and notebooks.
Users can expect the company’s Arc GPUs to be capable of mesh shading, variable rate shading, video upscaling, and real-time ray tracing.
Intel has also promised AI-accelerated super sampling with its upcoming Intel Arc GPUs.
“The launch of the Intel Arc brand and the reveal of future hardware generations signifies Intel’s deep and continued commitment to gamers and creators everywhere,” says Roger Chandler, head of Intel’s client GPU business. “We have teams doing incredible work to ensure we deliver first-class and frictionless experiences when these products are available early next year.”
In related news, last month, Intel said that its factories will start building Qualcomm chips. The company laid out a roadmap to expand its new foundry business to catch rivals such as TSMC and Samsung. The company said that it expects to regain its lead by 2025 and described five sets of chipmaking technologies it will roll out over the next four years.
Intel also said it will change its naming scheme for chipmaking technology, using names like “Intel 7” that align with how TSMC and Samsung market competing technologies.
